BREAKING NEWS!!

Well, not really. Rather, just news, classified in easy to understand categories.

THINGS I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN, THAT I APPARENTLY DIDN'T:

Don't attempt to run with pulled muscles. Look. I knew that aerobics wasn't what I was good at. But when I accidentally ended up going through an advanced body sculpting class, and couldn't walk for three days with muscles pulled from my knees to my neck, I decided that I could be in better shape. And today, a week after the most awful 60 minutes of my life, when I moved onto the next part of my training schedule my hamstrings protested. First with mild demands for attention, and after the third mile with screaming, crampy yells. Apparently I'm not healed yet. Must stop trying to be a hero. For....no one.*

THINGS I KNOW THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE CONFUSED ABOUT:

Only jerks print PDF's on the library printers. Look, everyone loves the free** printing available in the Law Library. Especially right before the major legal writing assignments are due. However, when you try to print PDF's to those printers, they can only print ONE PAGE AT A TIME. And those pages are sent one at a time to the printers. So your 80 page document takes 4 hours to print. It's really kind of a jerk move to tie up a printer for four hours. If you find it absolutely necessary, please do it at 8 am when nobody needs the printers. Not at 2 in the afternoon. Because let me be honest here: I am that girl who will cancel your print job in order to get mine through. I have no scruples.

THINGS WE BOTH ALREADY KNEW:

Ricky Martin is gay? This is so shocking! Except not. Because I was alive in the 90s. Seriously, did anyone think the guy who sang "She Bangs" and "Shake your Bon-Bon" was straight? I'd love to give the human race more credit than that. Seriously, I don't think even Sue Sylvester would need him to Swish It Up. Seriously, the guy is the hispanic Clay Aiken/Ryan Seacrest hybrid.

Jesse James is a stupid man. Seriously, you would trade Sandra Bullock***, she of the Oscar, friendly smile, good comedic timing, and general awesomeness for THIS? A tattoo model and possible nazi? One's man trash is another man's treasure I guess, but who would trade in Sandra for a trashy tattoo model nazi??? Clearly, James was threatened by the extreme force of awesome that is his wife. Ick.

AND IN OTHER NEWS:

Happy Passover!**** Baby B is celebrating the heritage of his people this week and all I can tell is that it's ruining Law Free Lunch. He can't eat ANYWHERE because of the processed grains thing. Look, Baby B, you eat pork ALL THE TIME. You are already terrible at being Jewish.***** Stop ruining my week with your silly religious needs.

*"I could be your hero baby!" Seriously, taking applications.
**With outrageous amounts of tuition, of course
***I realize she's not everyone's cup of tea, but objectively I feel she can be considered awesome.
****Do you wish people a happy passover? Not sure about Jewish etiquette.
*****Don't take this too hard. I haven't been to a confession in years.

POWER UP!!!!

I love the whole Nike + iPod thing for one reason: THE POWER SONG. Apparently, if your shoes feel you slowing down, they send psychic messages to your iPod to play the song that keeps you moving. While I can't get into the psychic message that Nike and iPod are trying to tell you (You need us both to work out!), I've always loved having one or two songs that really do keep you going, whether you're working out or working on outlines. Since for some reason, this blog always takes list forms:

MY TOP FIVE POWER SONGS:

5. I'm Gonna Make You Love Me, by the Jackson 5. The fact is, you can't go wrong with a little Motown when you're feeling down. Plus, when you're preparing for that terrifying interview, what's better than those lyrics? Also, they're good if you're stalking someone.*

4. Bottom of the Barrel, by Amos Lee. This song is a surprisingly upbeat song from a singer who is all about the blues. It's a short, quirky little number that basically says that things can only suck so much before they get better. "Get right down to the bottom of the barrel, and you float back on top."

3. The Galway Girl, by Steve Earle. It's positively positive. When I'm doing homework, I can't help but want to dance, when I'm walking home from school, I want to skip, and when I'm working out, I run to the beat. "I took her hand, and I gave her a twirl, and I lost my heart to a Galway Girl."

2. When You Believe, from the Prince of Egypt soundtrack. I know it's cheesy, but this is the greatest thing to listen to when stretching or when you're in the last lap of any workout. And it has to be the movie version, NOT the Whitney Houston version. Because the chorus with the little kids singing in Hebrew and getting faster and faster totally pumps me up.

1. Don't Stop Believin', especially the one by the Glee cast. Not to diss Journey, but I just love the a capella beginning. So good. The soaring vocals, kickass guitar solo, this song makes me want to run two more miles and find five more cases.

So there you go. My top five songs to get excited to. Man, now I almost want to get bored so that I can listen to them!!

*I am not a stalker.

You Have to Walk Before You Can Run

I mentioned in a very recent post that I spent a lot of last semester sick. And as anyone who has been blessed with a wicked case of the swine flu can tell you, that stuff will knock you down for the count. Due to my non-functioning body, exercise went right out the window for me last semester, and boy did I pay for it at the beginning of this one. Which is too bad, because 2010 is THE YEAR OF THE MINI.

That’s right, in a foolish, prideful moment, I promised my best friend from high school, Mandy, that I would run the Fort Wayne mini with her this fall. I tried to get back into the swing of things in the first week of school. I may have quit after a mile. Okay, a half mile.

It’s probably not necessary to describe how disappointed I was in myself. I immediately decided the mini was over for me and I was going to go back to a life of slovenly joy. Then I rapidly gained five pounds, and I was back on track for the mini. I got on the elliptical last week just to get my confidence back up, and I cut the speed on the treadmill by a lot on Wednesday night, but I made it 3.5 miles, which is farther than I’ve been able to run in about 8 months. And the mini is all about distance, not speed, so I’m okay with that.

I feel like second semester of law school is like that. We knew so much by the end of the first semester. I have a really good basic knowledge of Civil Procedure. I feel like I could defeat a claim for summary judgment. Subleases and Landlord Tort Liability? Not so much. But maybe that’s just because I can’t see the whole picture yet.

I’m an impatient person. I like to have all the answers, all the knowledge, and all the stamina right away. I give up fast when I don’t get it the first time. But if I just slow down a little, maybe I can get it the second time through. And now I can say by February, I should be able to run five miles. And I'm finally starting to understand what the hell is going on in Property.

One step at a time.
